Recognizing and Inspiring Talented Filmmakers through Filmi Shortfest

Short Films have always been a prominent part of the Indian Film Industry. From portraying inspiring stories to tickling everyone’s funny bone, Short Films are made in every genre for every kind of audience. India has produced many short films that have gained recognition nationally and internationally. As the country is filled with overflowing talent, we often hear news of such short films being awarded and presented on prestigious platforms. Appreciation and recognition that all deserving short films have received through distinguished events and competitions motivate aspiring filmmakers to showcase their creativity.

Let’s have a look at some of the award-winning short films made by talented filmmakers in India.

  • Shunyata: Directed by Chintan Sarda Shunyata won the best short film award at the Best of India Short Film Festival at Mack Sennett Studios in Los Angeles. This short film features Jackie Shroff playing the character of Hitman. This 22-minute fiction short film won $1,000 in the festival.

  • Chirbhog: The NHRC awarded Chirbhog a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakhs in its eighth prestigious Short Film competition on human rights. Chiirbhog is a Marathi language short film that sheds light on a very serious social issue of discrimination faced by people belonging to a lower caste community. It’s a story of a young boy facing humiliation due to his caste. Director Nilesh Ambedkar coordinated this short film.

  • Nehemich: Yudhajit Basu and Prithvijoy Ganguly are FTII students who competed in the 76th Cannes Film Festival student category. They presented their creation “Nehemich” a short film focusing on menstruation and the stigma around it. Based in a rural area of Maharashtra, this film follows a ritual called “gaonkar pratha”. This ritual believes women to stay untouchable and isolated during their period.

    Dobya: Chose to be screened at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, “Dobya” is a Marathi short film narrating the story of old man Tayta and his old bull Raja. Dobya talks about how materialism is above authenticity and is increasingly placed higher in human nature.

  • Bittu: Bittu bagged a nomination in the category of Short Film in Live Action at the 93rd Academy Awards. This short film showcased the beautiful friendship of two classmates and their friendship with a plot of a tragic incident that takes place in their life. The film is directed by 47th Student Academy Award winner Karishma Dev Dube.

Factors such as creativity, insightfulness, message effectiveness, storylining, and originality make short films worth watching and you can find all these factors in the above-mentioned films. All of these films have received acknowledgment across the nation and worldwide as well.

Getting well-deserved recognition for every cast and crew member’s work while working on the short films is necessary to inspire and motivate them to keep working and set an example for upcoming aspiring talents. 

In order to treasure and cherish short filmmaking, Filmi Jobs is organizing the “Filmi Shortfest,” an opportunity for all ambitious filmmakers to showcase their cinematic talent. This competition will present a platform for talents in our country to express themselves through the art of filmmaking.
